PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

School is out for summer but for many local kids that means the end of free and reduced-cost meal programs.

On Friday, volunteers helped bring food to those kids in need.

Oregon Food Bank and Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield workers were out at Bridge Elementary off Southeast Market Street.

The volunteers were able to give more than 4,500 pounds of produce to help the families in need, and people receiving the food said they're beyond grateful.

"There's a lot of people struggling today, so this is one less thing they have to worry about," said Crystal Hetterly.

"Me and my mom wanted to grab some vegetables because we know that they're very healthy for you," said 8-year-old Quinn Plunkett. "It's healthy for you, it helps you, it helps you breathe, it helps you have a good life."

The volunteers were able to help feed about 150 families.
