MARION COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

One man is in custody after he allegedly attempted to break into a car and ran from authorities before jumping off a bridge into a river Sunday.

Marion County deputies responded to a car theft at North Fork Park around 7:15 p.m.

The victims of the theft said they were alerted by their car alarm and were able to get a glimpse of the suspect, 29-year-old Forrest Frost, as he sped away in his own car.

According the officials, the victims chased the man towards Lyons but stopped their pursuit after Frost allegedly fired multiple gunshots at the victims’ car.

No one was hurt in the shooting.

Shortly after, a Linn County deputy spotted Frost in the Lyons area and pursued him back to North Fork Park.

Officials deployed spike strips which stopped the chase on the Pioneer Road Bridge.

Frost then proceeded to jump off the bridge and fall about 30 feet into the Santiam River.

Deputies said Frost swam ashore several hundred yards downstream and fled into a heavily wooded area.

K-9 teams from Marion County and the Salem Police Department, as well as a SWAT team, were called to search the area.

Frost surrendered to authorities around 1 a.m. He faces several charges including attempted assault, theft, unlawful use of a weapon and attempting to elude police.
