West Linn police have arrested a man who is believed to have been involved in backing into a family’s car with 1-year-old baby inside.

Police said they arrested Nicholas Mumford, 29, of West Linn at his workplace in Portland on June 17.

On June 4, Mumford allegedly backed his truck into a car, driven by Clifford Senner, after he became agitated while waiting for road construction.

Senner’s wife and baby were also inside the car.

According to Senner, Mumford was waiting in his truck ahead of him on Highway 43.

When Mumford was told by a traffic worker he would have to wait 20 minutes for construction to clear, he put his car in reverse and slammed backwards into Senner before driving away.

Senner said the force of the crash was so strong, it forced his engine inside the car.

“He hit the street worker’s sign when he took off. He almost hit five more street workers as he was going down the street,” Senner said.

The family members were not seriously injured in the incident.

Mumford is charged with reckless driving and three counts of reckless endangering.
