PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A speeding driver with a warrant was under the influence of marijuana when he crashed into a car in northeast Portland and seriously injured a man, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to Northeast 33rd Avenue and Emerson Street at 7:53 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said 31-year-old Matthew Joseph Nelson was driving a 2004 Cadillac Escalade at a high rate of speed when he hit a 1998 Toyota Corolla.

The 31-year-old driver of the Toyota suffered serious injuries. Police said he remained in the hospital Wednesday but is expected to survive his injuries.

Following the crash, police said Nelson and a woman in his SUV walked away from the scene. Witnesses kept an eye on them until officers arrived, according to police.

The passenger was interviewed by officers and released. Crash investigators said Nelson was under the influence of marijuana.

Nelson was arrested on charges of DUII-marijuana, hit and run, second-degree assault, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person and second-degree criminal mischief. Nelson also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Police initially said the injured driver was a woman, but officers corrected that information Wednesday. A Portland Police Bureau release also reported an incorrect street where the crash occurred, but that information has been corrected.
