A woman walking home from a grocery store in southeast Portland told police a man grabbed her from behind and tried to force her into the back of an SUV.

The attempted abduction was reported at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday.

A 22-year-old woman said she left the QFC store at Southeast Milwaukie Avenue and Duke Street, which is open 24 hours, and was walking eastbound on Bybee Boulevard toward 27th Avenue when she was attacked.

The woman told investigators a man grabbed her in a bear hug from behind and started pulling her toward the Eastmoreland Golf Course parking lot.

The woman said she fought and screamed as the man tried to push her into a vehicle. The woman managed to break away and run to a nearby house, where she asked the people inside to call 911.

The suspect is described as a white, Hispanic or mixed-race man in his 30s, 6 feet tall and 190 to 200 pounds with a thick build. He has an oval face, no facial hear and thick fingers. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and possibly blue jeans and work boots.

His vehicle was a newer SUV. The woman said it had a split-opening tailgate, with the glass pulling up and the tailgate pulling down.

The victim did not require medical attention at the scene, according to police.

Detectives said it's not clear if this incident is related to other stranger-to-stranger incidents that have recently been reported to police in northeast and southeast Portland.

On Tuesday, a woman walking her dog at the nearby Sellwood Riverfront Park said a masked man jumped out of the bushes and threatened her with a knife in an attempted robbery.
