WASHINGTON D.C. (KPTV) -

Oregon Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici is speaking out about gun control by joining a sit-in with other lawmakers in Washington, D.C.

The sit-in comes as the nation furiously debates gun control policy in the wake of the Orlando mass shooting with Democrats demanding a vote on legislation designed to prevent terrorists from buying a gun.

The rare sit-in demonstration began shortly before 12 p.m. in the Capitol, and Democratic House members are vowing to occupy the House floor as long as necessary.

FOX 12 spoke to Congresswoman Bonamici during the demonstration. She said she's tired of leaders offering thoughts and prayers, and moments of silence but taking no action.

"That happened at Sandy Hook, it happened after Aurora, it happened after Umpqua Community College, it happened after Clackamas Town Center, and most recently at the Pulse nightclub and the horrific shooting there."

Congresswoman Bonamici was also joined by Representative Peter DeFazio and Representative Earl Blumenauer at the sit-in.

Congresswoman Bonamici said she would like to see a ban on gun sales to people on the no-fly list, but gun-rights advocates argue such a bill would be a violation of due process.

Gun-rights advocates said it would force some law-abiding citizens go to court to exercise a constitutional right they already have.
