SHERIDAN, OR (KPTV) -

Around 1,400 people lost natural gas service in the Sheridan-Willamina area due to a low pressure issue that also led to the evacuation of a nursing home.

Northwest Natural Gas reports crews working in the area closed some valves that affected system pressure. The incident remains under investigation.

At 7:47 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters responded to a gas leak at the Sheridan Care Center on Southeast Sheridan Road.

The facility was evacuated with people receiving temporary shelter at the Trinity Lutheran Church and Sheridan High School. There were no reports of injuries or illnesses in connection with the gas leak.

At around midnight, it was determined the center was again safe to occupy.

The cause of the gas leak is believed to be part of the regional gas outage, according to Northwest Natural Gas.

Field technicians were going through neighborhoods Thursday turning off gas service while crews worked to fix the issue in the system.

Once fixed, Northwest Natural Gas workers will go door-to-door to restore service and re-light equipment.

Customers who are not available will have a note left on their door with a phone number to call to make arrangements to restore service at a later time.

Customers with questions can call 800-422-4012.
