PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

TriMet is bumping up the wage for beginning bus drivers by $3 per hour during the initial training period in hopes of attracting more qualified applicants.

TriMet announced Thursday that student bus operators will earn $14.25 per hour, up from $11.21 per hour, during their initial six-week training period.

The change will benefit all new student operators, as well as student operators already in the training period.

Following the six-week training period, part-time operators will earn $15.63 per hour. It takes about six months to transition to full-time status.

The top operator pay rate is $28.39 per hour after three years on the job, according to TriMet.

TriMet is currently hiring about 20 new operators every three weeks to keep up with service expansions, promotions and retirements.
