ALBANY, OR (KPTV) -

People were advised to avoid the area of Riverside Drive and Orleans Road between Albany and Corvallis on Thursday due to blasting caps found at a home.

Police said a man was cleaning out his home, located in the 34000 block of Riverside Drive, and found a plastic tote filled with what appeared to be blasting caps. The homeowner told deputies that he had just purchased the home, which was a prior rental property.

The Oregon State Police bomb squad was notified and by 2:20 p.m. several houses in the immediate area had been evacuated as a precaution.

OSP bomb squad confirmed the items found were military grade explosive material.

The Albany Fire Department was placed on standby until the explosives were rendered safe. The roadway was closed and nearby homes were evacuated for about five hours.

OSP bomb squad and the Air National Guard rendered the explosives safe and removed them from the scene. Deputies notified the evacuated home owners, and told them they could return to their houses.

Deputies are continuing to investigate.
