Gresham family awakens to car driving into their home

Posted: Updated:

A car crashed into the side of a Gresham home Thursday, leaving one man is in jail and the home owners feeling lucky to be safe.

The incident at the corner of Southeast 1st and Robin Drive. The home is boarded up where the out of control car crashed into the side of the house.

Inside the home, walls and wooden beams were pushed inward, shattering windows and causing a huge mess.

The Leavitt family lives in the home, and 12-year-old Emma was asleep in the family room when it happened, at 5:15 a.m.

“I thought that is was in my dream, like a bomb or something,” she said. “But then my friend Carly started to scream my name so I knew it was real.”

Emma worried that her 10-year-old brother and 7-year-old sister might be hurt, but luckily they were in another part of the house, and her grandfather, whose room saw the damage, was gone on vacation.

Emma’s father Mark Leavitt said whole house shook. When he went outside to investigate, he was shocked not to find someone hurt but a couple arguing.

“Once I was sure the kids were safe, I scooped them up and put them in my room on the opposite end of the house,” he recalled. “That’s when I went outside and what got me was, they were just arguing about petty stuff, like ‘You should’ve done this’ and ‘You should’ve done that.’ That’s what kind of irritated me.”

Leavitt called the police and officers arrested the man. The irate father said they never apologized or even asked if his family was alright.

Gresham police said and the woman who was in the vehicle was taken to the hospital.
