Horses of 'Odysseo' take a vacation at Ridgefield farm

Posted: Updated:

"Odysseo" is a majestic show featuring 49 four-legged stars that perform to sold-out audiences around the world, earning rave reviews for their theatrics.

But when you work that hard, you deserve a break, which is exactly what the horses are getting at a lavish farm in Ridgefield this week.

"It's really important for them, and mentally and physically. They can run around, enjoy, be with their friends outside," said Marc-Olivier Leprohon, equestrian operations director with Cavalia.

The horses arrived this week from a sold-out stint in Utah, and went straight to the farm. It's a place where horses can be horses.

"Right now, you see all the white horses. They're dirty," said Leprohon. "We're in holidays. They're just being horses. They're rolling outside."

The 10-day interlude between shows reflects the philosophy of Cavalia, a company known for combining theatrical arts with equestrian excellence. The show features 10 different breeds with dozens of people dedicated to their care.

"Even when they're on vacation … it's more relaxed for the horses, but we still have a lot of care to do," said horse technician Margaret Keers. "These are like our best friends, all these horses."

The vacation plan is not the only benefit. The staff treats their stars like family, and there is even a retirement plan.

"We want to follow what they are telling us," said Leprohon. "That way, when a horse is ... when you can see that they are not happy doing the show, we are just going to pull them out from the show, find them a new home, where they can enjoy their new life."

"Odysseo" opens July 7 under the white top on the South Waterfront.
