VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Fox 12 and Les Schwab Tire Centers are happy to announce this month’s “Be the Change” recipient Marty Sausville of the Mentors of Boys organization.

Sausville said he has always had a passion for mentoring. Having not grown up with a father, he has been striving to give other fatherless boys a chance to grow and thrive.

After his father left when he was about 8 years old, Sausville’s uncle stepped in, taking on the role of father figure.

Now Sausville wants to do the same for other Vancouver boys.

“As we meet boys like this, we all have something in common. Either there’s a long distance dad, divorce, or no dad or whatever. If I could give them 10 percent of what my uncle gave me, I would be doing them a great service,” he said.

In 1993, Sausville founded the Mentors of Boys program. The program allows boys between the ages of 8 and 12 to engage in outdoor activities with other father-like figures in their community.

Boys attend the M.O.B. at Camp Optimist once a month and it is run by several male volunteers who share the same passion as Sausville.

The boys grow and bond with each other, as well as their mentors.

Brenden Prothe, 10, said his parents are going through a divorce. He finds comfort at Camp Optimist with the other kids.

“No one plays with me ever so when I’m with the M.O.B., this is the only time I can be myself,” said Prothe.

Mentors of Boys has helped over 110 boys, and some of the earlier participants have become mentors themselves.

Those mentors, Sausville says, are making a difference in the boys’ lives.

Some boys, like Brenden, said are inspired to become mentors themselves someday.

“That’s what it’s about and they love doing it too. We’re proud of those boys,” Sausville said.
