Murder suspect changes plea, admits to killing young father

A suspect in a 3-year-old murder case is finally admitting that he killed a Portland man during a violent robbery.

Clifton Carey, 23, pleaded guilty to felony murder and aggravated murder in the death of 25-year-old Charles Weber in court Friday.

In March 2013, Weber was at home in Southwest Portland when police said Carey and three other men ambushed him, intending to steal drugs and cash.

The robbery took a violent turn when police said Carey brutally attacked Weber with a machete and killed him.

Weber’s friends and relatives confronted Carey in court, explaining how his actions have impacted their lives, and the life of Weber's now 6-year-old daughter.

Wendy Brown’s son is Weber’s half-brother, and she became emotional speaking directly to Carey.

“I don’t think my son will ever be the same,” she said. “I think what you did was despicable. And if you believe in God, I hope somehow, you’ll get forgiveness from somewhere.”

Weber’s mother, Kathleen McCoy also spoke up in court, expressing gratitude that Carey is finally taking responsibility for the murder.

“It’s been a long three years. And not that I’ll ever get over it, but I believe this is a first step in his healing,” McCoy said, pointing to Carey. “Because I also know that, along with all of us, he’s also damaged.”

Although he sat stone-faced most of the time, Carey did stand up and apologize to his victim’s family.

“I don’t expect them to forgive me,” Carey said while standing in handcuffs. “I know that I caused a lot of pain to Charlie’s family. I appreciate them coming here to share their hurt. And I’m sorry I was responsible for that.”

Carey will be sentenced for aggravated murder in a few months. But on the charge of felony murder, the judge sentenced Carey on Friday to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
