Lincoln County, OR (KPTV) -

A suspected pipe bomb near Lincoln City Friday was not an explosive, but an old flashlight according the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

According to deputies, a mail carrier reported at around 2 p.m. that there was a possible pipe bomb sitting between two mailboxes in the 400 block of Drift Creek Road, just south of Lincoln City.

Deputies responded and with the assistance of ODOT blocked off the roadway until the Oregon State Police Explosives Unit was able to respond.

Within a few hours, the OSP Explosives Unit arrived and were able to use robotic technology to safely analyze the device.

After 15 minutes, they determined the device was not an explosive, but an old flashlight.

The flashlight was thrown away and the road was reopened at 4:50 p.m., according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies on the scene said neighbors and drivers in the area were very understanding of the temporary closure, and supported the approach of “Better safe than sorry.”
