PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Police are investigating a shooting on Northeast Glisan Street, and a related car crash on Northeast 162nd Avenue near Halsey Saturday, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Officers responded at 9:15 a.m. to the report of gunfire at Northeast 105th Avenue and Glisan Street, according to Portland police.

There were no shortage of witnesses: a group was doing yard work at a nearby church when several people heard the gunfire and a couple teens saw it.

"They were shooting in my direction," said Caleb Newberry, estimating he was about 20 yards away from the gunfire "I was like, 'I need to get down really fast."'

Newberry said he saw smoke from the gunfire pouring out of one of the cars and added that his twin saw the muzzle flash. Both teens were trimming hedges in front of Glisan Street Baptist Church.

Responding investigators marked and photographed several shell casings on and around Glisan Street. A few of the casings were about 100 feet from Beverly Mathew's house.

"They sounded right in the front window," Mathew's said. "I didn't look outside, I hit the floor."

She said she's lived in her home for more than 20 years and feels as if the neighborhood gets more unsafe with each passing year.

"I was frightened for my life," Mathew's said of the gunfire. "I'm disappointed in the neighborhood --- I really am. I may move."

Approximately 15 minutes after the shots were fired, the Gresham Police Department responded to the report of a single-car crash on Northeast 162nd Avenue, just south of Halsey.

Portland police said officers determined that the people inside the car were likely connected to the shooting on Glisan Street.

Both the driver and passenger attempted to walk away but were quickly found, according to Portland police. They were taken to a local hospital for serious injuries suffered during the crash.

Traffic is closed on Glisan Street, near 105th Avenue; and on 162nd Avenue between Halsey and Multnomah Streets.

The Gang Enforcement Team is responding to conduct an investigation.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Police Non-Emergency Line at 503-823-3333.
