Woman shoots and kills stranger in her SE Portland home

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Neighbors in the area where a woman shot a stranger in her home early morning said they never heard the gunshot just before 2 a.m. Sunday morning on Southeast 118th Place.

Several residents also told Fox 12 they never saw police either, and were deeply disturbed when they later learned what happened.

“Lately there has been an uptick (in crime),” neighbor Tim Crawley said Sunday. “This is absolutely something we worry about. It started with a shooting at Heat, which is a strip club just here on the corner of 122nd and Holgate, and now this.”

Officers and medics were called to the home on the 4100 block of Southeast 118th Place near Southeast Boise Street, and the homeowner directed them inside the home, where they found a man dead.

Detectives say the 33-year-old woman and her two children, ages 5 and 10, returned home and she discovered the unknown man in one of the children’s bedrooms.

The woman was armed with a handgun and shot and killed the 59-year-old man.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not yet been made public, but some are hailing the woman a hero.

“She was very fortunate to have been armed,” Crawley said. “She’s obviously defending herself, and she uses a gun to protect herself.”

Neighbor Alexander Wolff said, “Murder isn’t anything to think lightly about, but if it’s protecting a family member or a child or something, yeah absolutely.”

Police say the homeowner is cooperating and was not arrested.

The name of the man has not yet been released.

Wolff had just moved to the street a month earlier. He said when it comes to living in big cities like Portland, crime comes with the territory. It’s a different sort of feeling though when it’s on your own street.

“It’s a little unsettling -- especially just moving to the neighborhood. (I) didn’t really know what to expect, and to hear something like that -- it’s a little freaky I gotta say,” Wolff said.

Police say once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office for review.
