A dog owner was cited Monday after a Tigard police officer was forced to rescue a small dog from a hot car.

The Tigard Police Department tweeted a picture of the small Chihuahua that was left inside a car at the Washington Square Mall.

Officials said the owner did show up before the officer had to break the window to rescue the dog.

Police said the owner was cited and the dog was taken to a nearby shelter.

Officials would like to remind pet owners of the dangers of leaving pets inside cars on hot days.

Even with the windows cracked, temperatures can quickly rise to the point where they become dangerous.

According to local veterinarians, temperatures inside a car can rise at least 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.
