Northeast Sandy Boulevard was shut down in the Fairview area Tuesday afternoon as a hazmat crew responded to an incident involving a garbage truck.

Deputies said something that was picked up during routine garbage collection caused an odor that alarmed the driver, who then called in a possible hazardous material issue.

A Gresham Fire Department hazmat team responded to the scene. Firefighters said there was no fire and no danger to people in the area.

Still, Northeast Sandy Boulevard was closed between Northeast 207th Avenue and 223rd Avenue. The closure was expected to remain in place possibly through 5 p.m. Tuesday, but deputies said the scene was cleared and the road had re-opened by 3:11 p.m.

There were no reports of any injuries in connection with this incident. No other details were immediately released by investigators.
