Area wine makers create special blend to honor teen killed in accident

LAKE OSWEGO, OR (KPTV) -

A group of local wine makers are working together to honor the life of a West Linn teen killed in a car crash years ago.

The group created a special red blend memorial wine for Maddi Higgins named “Angel in the Outfield #5.”

The 17-year-old softball player died in a car crash just three days short of finishing her junior year at West Linn High School back in 2014.

Maddi’s mother Carrie Higgins is the sales manager at Crush Creative Packaging, a commercial wine label printer located in Lake Oswego.  When her friends in the wine industry heard about what happened they wanted to do something to keep Maddi’s legacy alive.

Last June two local wineries donated barrels of their own wine to make the special blend, and staff at august Cellars donated their time and resources to bottle the wine for free.

The group said 56 cases of “Angel in the Outfield” were bottled, with the proceeds from sale being donated to the Maddi Higgins Scholarship Fund and the Teen Safe Driving Campaign fund also established in Maddi’s name.

“We want to help out, we want to be a part of making Oregon a better place, a safer place, the roads safer,” Tom Schaad, owner of August Cellars, said. “You know community spirit, community awareness, it’s a good thing.”

Since the launch of the wine last summer, the Higgins family said they’ve sold dozens of cases, adding that only about 10 cases are left.
