PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Fireworks on the Fourth of July are fun for many of us, but for our pets, they can be terrifying. The Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter in Hillsboro has a few tips to help keep pets safe this holiday.

Double check your fencing. Make sure there aren't any loose boards or places for dogs to crawl under.

If you have an anxious animal, consider calming products such as a ThunderShirt that wraps around the dog.

As for cats, keep in mind they can panic from the noise. If they are indoor, keep an extra eye that they don't dart outside.

Finally, make sure pets have IDs on their collars and are microchipped with information that is up to date.
