PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A local hospital taking part in a national campaign to advance cancer research known as the Cancer Moonshot Summit was recognized Wednesday by Vice President Joe Biden for its work.

The day-long event was part of the Obama administration's Cancer Moonshot effort, which is aimed at doubling the rate of progress in the fight against cancer within five years. Thousands of people around the country joined the cause at the simultaneous locations.

Dozens of Oregonians took part in the summit event at the Providence Cancer Center in Portland, which Biden cited as part of the Oncology Precision Network.

Providence, along with Intermountain Healthcare and Stanford Cancer Institute, developed OPN as a way to advance treatments for cancer through increasing access to clinical trials and data sharing.

A spokeswoman said Providence Cancer Center was asked to host a summit because of its work with OPN, as well as its reputation as an international leader in immunotherapy cancer research.

Curing cancer through immunotherapy uses a person's own immune system to attack and kill cancer cells.

“We are at a very exciting time in history where we have great potential to make a huge difference against a lot of these cancers that, in the past, have been really hard for us to treat,” Dr. Jason Baird said. ”We don't know how good it's going to be, but we know we definitely have something that works.”

Biden lost his son, Beau, to cancer last May, but he told everyone at the different summit locations Wednesday that the Cancer Moonshot effort is not about him, but rather it's about moving forward together.
