ESTACADA, OR (KPTV) -

An 18-year-old from Newberg drowned attempting to swim across the Clackamas River with friends at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada.

The body of Brandt Hatch was recovered from the water Wednesday evening.

Emergency crews responded to the park in rural Clackamas County at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Witnesses said two of Hatch's friends made it across the river, but he went under and did not resurface. None of the swimmers were wearing life jackets or flotation devices, according to deputies.

Rescuers arriving at the scene learned Hatch had been underwater for about 10 minutes. Crews soon located and recovered his body.

"The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office would like to remind users that the water is still very cold and to wear personal flotation devices when near or in the water. Users should also let others know where you will be and stay with others when in the water," according to a statement from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Crews from a dozen local agencies responded to assist at the scene Wednesday.
