PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Come November, it looks like Oregon voters will be asked to approve a permanent funding plan for outdoor school programs.

The "Save Outdoor School for All" campaign announced that it has collected more than 130,000 signatures for a ballot initiative. That is about 40,000 more than what is required.

Campaign organizers say they are confident the measure will pass.

"What's really exciting is that the support is very strong in rural, as well as urban areas ... among Democrats, Independents and Republicans," said Rex Burkholder, chairman of the Outdoor School for All committee. "People love outdoor school and know it's really important."

Outdoor school has been a rite of passage for fifth and sixth graders for decades. Students spend a week at camp and learn about science while building their social skills.

If the signatures are verified, and voters approve the measure, 4 percent of Oregon Lottery proceeds would be set aside to permanently fund the outdoor school program.
