SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Family and friends are mourning the loss of a Salem man, who was killed in an overnight hit-and-run on Wednesday.

Police are still looking for the driver involved.

“Everyone loved him. He was a very loving, sweet, caring guy,” said Weslee Bursell, who went to South Salem High School with Alex Armes.

Bursell said the news that his friend’s life was claimed in a hit-and-run is still sinking in.

“Just to know he’s gone is hard to believe. It’s just very tragic,” Bursell told Fox 12.

Salem Police said early Wednesday, around 3 a.m., officers were called to the 1600 block of Liberty St Southeast, near Lincoln, on reports of a man laying in the street. That man was Alex.

“I think he was walking home from a friend’s, or something like that, deep in thought, and all of a sudden..., “ Bursell speculates.

Investigators say the 18-year-old was hit by a car, and the driver took off shortly after.

“I hope the guy comes forward or the investigators find what happened,” Bursell said.

Thursday evening family and friends gathered for a private vigil at Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem to honor Alex.

Investigators are still on the lookout for the driver of the car involved in this deadly hit and run. If you know anything about this case, you’re asked to call Salem Police right away.
