THE DALLES, OR (KPTV) -

Residents in the Columbia River Gorge who had to evacuate their homes overnight due to a wildfire were allowed to return Friday morning.

Officials said the approximately 30 residents of Celilo Village who left their homes would be allowed back.

The fire, dubbed the 15 Mile Fire, started around 5:30 p.m. Thursday east of The Dalles and quickly grew to an area of nearly 3,000 acres.

As of Thursday night, firefighters said they had the flames 60 percent contained.

Interstate 84 was shut down for some time Thursday because of the fire. The freeway has since reopened.

The American Red Cross established a shelter for those who have had to evacuate their homes. It's located at The Dalles Middle School, 1100 E. 12th St.
