Lifeguards, new life jackets making Klineline Pond safer

CLARK COUNTY, WA (KPTV) -

One local swimming spot is working to make sure people stay safe this summer with life jackets and lifeguards on hand.

Starting Friday life guards will be on duty daily for the rest of summer at Klineline Pond in Vancouver.

There is also a life jacket loaner station filled with more than 100 life vests.

The lifeguards are part of the Safe Kids Clark County program, and the jackets were donated by the International Order of the Blue Gavel Nautical Safety Foundation.

The donations replaced worn-out and weathered life jackets, and the Anne Johnston, coordinator of Safe Kids Clark County, said the new vests will be safer than the pool toys that some think are enough.

"Inflatable toys and mattresses are not a substitute for life jackets and will not keep kids safe," she said. "When properly worn, life jackets save lives. All children should wear them when swimming."

Parents said Friday that the extra safety and reassurance that having both lifeguards and life jackets provides is welcome.

"The kids that I have here are 5, 6 and 2, and they're taking swim lessons, but they're not very strong swimmers,” parent Chantal Krumbein said. “So I feel a lot safer watching them the whole time, but also having life jackets on."
