PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Just in time for Fourth of July weekend, a local World War II veteran was presented with medals for his service.

92-year-old Kelly Wong served as an Army combat infantryman in the Liberation of the Philippines and in the Invasion of Okinawa.

Senator Ron Wyden presented Wong with the medals in southeast Portland Friday.

Wong's nephew Harry Hom said the awards came as somewhat of a surprise for the family.

“So long after the fact has made it an even greater feeling and achievement on the part of my uncle,” he said. “He's such a modest individual that when I was growing up he never talked about the war or anything, and it's only of late, only 50 years later, that he has started to talk about some of the experiences."

Wyden said the awards were so overdue because of records that were moved and lost through the years.
