Tigard woman has rare jaw growth, hopes insurance company will change policy

Posted: Updated:

Anna Sacheen Parker from Tigard has always been self conscious about her crooked smile.

As she folds the pages of her high school year book Parker said, “I always said you could only take a picture of my good side.”

Parker said her jaw would lock often and didn’t know the reason until she had seen a specialist because of her many issues.

In 2013, Parker said she was diagnosed with left side hemimandibular hyperplasia, where one side of her jaw bone keeps growing.

“My jaw is so messed up,” Parker said. “None of my teeth touch and they’re getting pushed out.”

Parker's health care provider wrote to Fox 12 stating if Parker were to be in an accident or need a surgical procedure, placing any type of advanced airway on her will be difficult because of her jaw opening. They add an average jaw opening for a woman is between 35 to 45 millimeters, however, Parker’s is now less than half of that.

According to Parker to solve her problem, she would need surgery and her doctor agrees. However, Parker said her insurance, United Healthcare does not cover her needs because it considers it a cosmetic operation.

A spokesperson for United Healthcare provided a statement that they understand the challenges she has managing her diagnosis: “Our medical directors have reached out to her physicians to discuss her options, since her benefit plan does not include coverage for this type of surgery.”

Parker is learning sign language in case she is unable to speak in the future.

“We just live day-to-day right now,” Parker said as tears rolled down her cheek.

She hopes to find answers for her problem.

Parker’s friends have started a fundraising site to help her with medical costs.
