Nearly 1,000 young adults will be taking part in a Portland internship program this year.
More than 100 of those interns were at the Oregon Historical Society Friday for the 2016 SummerWorks program kickoff.
SummerWorks is a combined effort between Multnomah County, Portland and Worksystems to pay for youth’s wages and training for summer internships.
One intern who also participated last year told Fox 12 he knows a lot of people who are involved in gangs, and this program helped him out of that.
“I was the kind of guy who didn’t see a way out, and through a lot of mentoring and things like that and different opportunities like SummerWorks, I guess I got connected with the right people and the right doors opened for me,” said Stephon Hartley.
The summer internships last for six to ten weeks.
