Salem woman gives birth, finds car stolen from hospital lot

Posted: Updated:

Salem Police are looking for the suspect that stole a 1995 red Honda Civic hatchback from the hospital while its owner was giving birth last week.

Tara Hedges said she, her newborn girl and family were leaving the hospital June 24 when they realized the car they parked just the day before was gone.

“I thought it was kind of a joke,” Hedges said of when her fiancé told her the car wasn't there. “‘Like no you’re lying, it’s not really not there,’ and he said, ’No it’s literally not there.’”

Once she realized it was stolen Hedges said she felt disbelief.

“For it to even be the hospital where other people are sick, hurt or having babies, or visiting people who are sick or hurt is a little disturbing,” she said.

While the family waits to see if the car will be returned, they are sharing one car.

Hedges said she has to take her fiancé to work and it’s difficult to now transport the family’s three other children to activities. What’s worse she said, is the car is more than a means of transportation: a good friend had traveled with her to pick up the car when she bought it and also helped her fix it up.

“He passed away and so in a way -- that’s kinda of another tie to him, and there were parts on the car that were his that we won’t get back," Hedges said.

Hedges said she suspects the car has been parted out. She’s still hopeful that police will find it and return what’s left.

She said she chose to speak to the media in hopes somebody will share tips to help police.
