HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

Independence Day weekend is the time most pets go missing, according to the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter in Hillsboro.

Shelter staff said they have had several pets come into their shelter, and they are expecting more Tuesday.

Manager Deborah Wood said the shelter has already reunited about 13 families with their pets.

Her recommendation is for pet owners to think proactively – whether it's checking any fencing, putting their pet in a quiet room, or talking to their vet about medications.

She added that most pets run off because of the noise from fireworks or from the vibrations.

"To them it’s not a fun surprise of noise, to them they feel like their lives are in danger," said Wood. "Dogs who enjoy being in the yard will suddenly burrow under fences and climb over fences. Cats who are happy indoor kitties will dart through doors and it becomes a terrible for the pets this time of year."

She said whether you’ve lost your pet or found one, contact your local county animal shelter.
