A search and rescue team are currently looking for a missing plane with three people on board after it failed to arrive in Grants Pass Tuesday morning on a flight from Brookings.

Around 4 a.m. Tuesday, the Curry County Sheriff's Office and the Brookings Police Department received a call from FAA out of Seattle asking to check local airports for a missing plane.

According to CCSO, Cheryl Belnap of Grants Pass called the FAA when her husband John Belnap, her 17-year-old son and another young male passenger did not arrive in Grants Pass when expected.

CCSO said a Cessna 172 left the Brookings airport between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Monday heading towards Grants Pass. According to Seattle Flight services the last radar ping was within a few miles of Brookings Airport.

The United States Coast Guard was called in to help search the area between Grants Pass and Brookings.

Around 11 a.m., two beachcombers called Brookings Police Department and gave them a backpack and a few other items including identification they found on the beach at Lone Ranch State Park, about four miles north of Brookings.

According to CCSO, the items appeared to have washed ashore indicating the plane crashed into the ocean.

CCSO said the items belonged to the missing plane and passengers.

Search and Rescue members walked the coastline from Whaleshead State Park to Harris Beach State Park. SAR members found several other items along the coastline that are believed to be from the plane.

The U.S. Coast Guard are continuing to search off shore for the downed plane.
