PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Police report it’s investigating a shooting which happened around 3 a.m. Tuesday near the Springwater Trail and Southeast 82nd Avenue.

PPB reports one person was sent to the hospital, while another person was detained as a person of interest; the two were residents of a homeless camp nearby.

“It was off the chain here,” Tim Scott a resident of the camp said. “I was woken up by a girl screaming and someone yelling to call 911.”

Residents near the Springwater Trail are not pleased with the situations the camps bring in. Mike Nielsen whose lived in the neighborhood for more than ten years said there’s a lot of noise during the middle of the night.

“It’s not a good deal, it’s not a good scene,” Nielsen said. “It makes it pretty hectic for us.”

A spokesperson for Mayor Charlie Hales has said the city’s has cleanup efforts to address homeless issues, including harassment of people using the trail, environmental harm including garbage and human waste and abuse of homeless women. They add the section of one trail was cleaned up and cleared from Southeast 75th to 83rd Avenue.

“It was like a migration,” Nielsen said. “It just pushed it down.”

Nielsen said the homeless issue was diverted from local businesses and trails, but has brought them close near his home.

Another resident of the camp, Lynette said the group is like family and they watch out for one another.

“I don’t know where we will go. They’ve kicked us out of every place,” Lynette said.

Scott said he’s been living on the streets for eight years and recognizes that few incidents have occurred in the camp, but said they are done by people who don’t live in the camps.

“I know we’re not liked,” Scott said. “We would try to show that we want to be part of the community.”
