DAMASCUS, OR (KPTV) -

It is one of the largest animal rescues in Oregon history. Officials said 245 pet birds were seized from a Damascus barn.

The owner told the Oregon Humane Society he is a long-time breeder, and admitted he had not cleaned the cages since last spring.

OHS rescued all the birds on Wednesday after someone alerted them to the conditions.

The birds were all housed in a barn on Southeast Bel Air Drive in Damascus. The bird species seized included African grey parrots, macaws, cockatoos, conures, ring neck dove, pigeons, Amazon parrots, finches and parakeets.

OHS said the cages were stacked three to four high with waste falling from the top cages to the ones below.

The waste was several inches high in some of the cages, and many of the birds are suffering from feather plucking, overgrown nails and beaks, and chronic stress.

The owner did not give up the birds voluntarily, instead officials said he told them he planned to sell some of the birds.

OHS workers have set up an emergency shelter to care for the birds and they are working on treating them for medical issues.

Officials said the owner is now under investigation for animal neglect.

OHS said they also rescued one kinkajou, which is a small exotic mammal.
