Jessica Smith's murder confession played in court

Posted: Updated:

The Vancouver mom accused of killing her two-year-old daughter and hurting her 13-year-old daughter in Cannon Beach was back in court on Thursday, and for the first time her confession video was played.

It has been almost two years since police found a horrific scene inside Jessica Smith's hotel room at the Surf-Sand Resort.

Cannon Beach Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn was the first officer on scene after hotel staff called for help.

Once inside, Schermerhorn said he found two-year-old Isabella Smith dead and 13-year-old Alana Smith with wounds on her neck and wrists.

Jessica Smith disappeared but was found a few days later in the woods off of a logging road.

In court on Thursday, prosecutors played the video confession. In the video, Smith is seen admitting to police that she killed Isabella and badly hurt Alana.

At one point during the confession, investigators asked Smith why she chose to hurt her children the way she did.

Investigator: Did you think about drowning them as well?

Smith: No.

Investigator: Why not? Why wasn't that an option for her?

Smith: I don't know, I didn't have...I don't know.

On Wednesday, Smith's lawyers argued in court that police should have obtained a warrant before entering the hotel room, but Chief Schermerhorn said there was no time for that.

Last month, the judge in the case ruled Smith is mentally fit to stand trial.

A trial date has not yet been set.
