ALBANY, OR (KPTV) -

A West Albany High School teacher is facing charges including luring a minor and third-degree attempted sex abuse involving a 17-year-old student.

James Walter Myrick, 28, was arrested at his home on the 700 block of Turning Leaf Street Northwest in Albany at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Police said his arrest followed a six-week investigation.

Detectives said Myrick used his position as a teacher to attempt to coerce a 17-year-old girl to have sexual contact with him.

The investigation began when other students reported concerns that Myrick was having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Myrick was booked into the Linn County Jail on charges of luring a minor, third-degree attempted sex abuse, first-degree official misconduct, coercion and tampering with a witness.

Albany police said they have reason to believe there are other victims who have not yet come forward to report similar conduct by Myrick.

Anyone with information about Myrick or this investigation is asked to call detectives at 541-917-7686.
