VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A man accused of brutally beating a 2-year-old girl at a Vancouver motel pleaded not guilty to the charge of first-degree attempted murder.

Kyle Holder, 32, appeared in court Friday in a wheelchair for his formal arraignment.

Deputies responded to the Sunnyside Motel on the 12200 block of Northeast Highway 99 the evening of June 28.

Investigators said Holder was beating and kicking his 2-year-old daughter. Court documents state he picked her up, threw her out the window of the motel room onto the cement walkway and then picked her up again and threw her onto the ground several times.

A witness, Don Gilbert, stepped in and hit Holder with a baseball bat in the back and head.

"He was just babbling about God's coming for everyone and he's got to get the evil out of his daughter," Gilbert told FOX 12.

Deputies used a Taser to take Holder into custody. Court documents state he told deputies, "I did not want to kill her, but I had to. I had to hold my daughter and crush her head so she could go up to the sky."

Holder's defense team questioned his mental status in court Friday.

The child's grandmother said this is not Holder's first violent outburst.

"He knew what he was doing because he tried to almost kill me too," she said outside the courtroom.

The girl, Trinity, remains in a coma, according to her grandmother.

"If she gets out of the coma, you know what's going to happen, she's probably going to have brain damage because of his craziness, Kyle," she said.

The woman said her family wants Holder to remain behind bars for the rest of his life.

"It will happen again. He don't care about nothing," she said.

A mental competency hearing for Holder was scheduled for July 15.
