Firefighters battle wind while fighting Newport house fire

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters had to battle strong winds while trying to put out a fire along the Oregon Coast.

Newport Fire Department was called to house on fire on Southeast 5th Street just before 10:30 Saturday night.

The first crews to the scene found two of the three stories of the home on fire.

They say strong winds were driving the fire, and that access was complicated by a steep hillside.

Crews were able to put out the fire thanks to multiple ladder trucks from below and hand lines from above.

The house was not occupied at the time, but some nearby structures were temporarily evacuated.

The section of Bay Boulevard directly below the home remains closed until the home can be evaluated for collapse potential.
