LINCOLN CITY, OR (KPTV) -

A passenger died in a crash on Highway 18 when a van left the road, slammed into several trees and caught on fire.

Emergency crews responded to the highway north of Lincoln City at 2:59 a.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said a 15-passenger GMC van was heading westbound when it left the road for unknown reasons.

The driver was outside of the van when crews arrived and had suffered severe injuries and burns, according to firefighters. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital before being flown to a hospital in Portland for treatment.

The front passenger was found dead in the burned out van, according to police.

Investigators said alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

The names of the driver and passenger have not yet been released by police.

Highway 18 was shut down for eight hours following the crash. Traffic was re-routed onto North Bank Road during that time.
