LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -

A cat is recovering at the Humane Society of Cowlitz County after it was found badly injured from a firework being forced into its mouth.

The Humane Society posted the kitty's story on its Facebook page this week.

The cat was brought to the shelter over the Fourth of July weekend. Veterinarians said it appears someone intentionally put a firework in the cat's mouth.

The cat suffered burns all over the inside of her mouth, including her tongue. The cat was found dumped in a slough near the Highlands.

The Humane Society of Cowlitz County's veterinary team believes the cat will make a full recovery.

The cost to nurse her back to health, however, is expected to be significant. The Humane Society is accepting donations for the cat's medical costs. Her receiving number is 150541 and more information can be found at cowlitzhumane.com.

The case is also an active criminal investigation, according to the Humane Society of Cowlitz County. Anyone with information about who hurt the cat is asked to call investigators at 360-577-0151.

The cat was transferred to the Oregon Humane Society, where it was quarantined due to a severe respiratory infection. Once fully recovered, the cat will be put up for adoption.
