KEIZER, OR (KPTV) -

Keizer police are using a creative way to connect with kids during summer time and strengthen their bond with the community.

The department is hosting its third-annual Blast Camp.

"We want to reach out to the community and say listen, we are here for you, we are here for your kids, we want everybody to be safe," said Lt. Andrew Copeland.

The camp teaches children everything from self-defense to what swims in local rivers and lakes.

"Today we are going to cut open fish," camper Haley May said.

May is among 209 kids taking part in the week-long camp.

"Yesterday they had the robot from the bomb squad to show them." said Blake Malone of the Boys & Girls Club. “The kids were really excited over that.”

The camp runs from July 12 through July 15 for students between grades three and six.

"We are hoping that with this interaction that they have for four days with us here at the Keizer Police Department will last a lifetime," Copeland said.

Keizer police are looking for donations to offset the cost to allow more kids to participate. Anyone interested in donating or who may have questions about the program can contact Copeland at 503-856-3463 or copelanda@keizer.org.
