The Sellwood Bridge will be closed for the weekend to motor vehicle traffic.

The bridge closure began at 6 a.m. Thursday and will last until no later than 6 a.m. Monday. The bridge will remain open to bicyclists and pedestrians with intermittent delays.

The closure will allow the contractor building the new bridge to pour the last section of concrete for the deck of the east approach. The section is along the seam between the north and south halves of the new deck.

The bridge needs to be closed for several days because traffic vibrations can damage concrete while it cures and hardens.

The bridge will reopen to traffic as soon as the concrete cure is completed.

Highway 43 will remain open to two-way traffic at all times. The posted westbound detour routes during the closure are Highway 99E-McLoughlin Boulevard to the Ross Island Bridge to Highway 43 for northbound drivers, and Highway 99E to I-205 to Highway 43 for southbound travelers. Eastbound routes are the reverse.

In addition, the two inside lanes of Highway 43 will be closed between the bridge and Freeman Motors to the north from July 11 until as late as July 22. The contractor will be removing a median, grading, and repaving the lanes during this time. One lane will remain open in each direction.

This work will add to traffic congestion due to the round-the-clock lane closures.
