BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

The Beaverton Police Department has named a 30-year veteran of the force as its new interim police chief.

Capt. Jim Monger will begin his new assignment on Friday.

Former Chief Geoff Spalding announced his retirement last month. His last day is Thursday. Spalding served as chief of police since February 2009.

Spalding said he plans to stay active in the Beaverton community.

Monger, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, has been a captain with the Beaverton Police Department since July 2013. He previously served as a patrol officer for 13 years, a sergeant for eight years and a lieutenant for five years.

"I have every confidence in Captain Monger's leadership abilities," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "He has been our project manager on the proposed public safety facility and I have gotten a chance to work closely with him. He has done an outstanding job working with our community partners and internally with the rank and file men and women of the department."
