A park patrol security officer who set fires on Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District property has been sentenced to three years in prison.

John Townsend, 25, pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree arson in May. He was arrested in December 2015.

Five fires were set to unoccupied houses at 4950 N.W. Saltzman Road and 20 N.W. 114th Ave. between April 22 and May 20.

Police said Townsend was identified as the suspect through witness interviews and surveillance video.

He was employed by the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District at the time of the fires. He had worked for the department for two years.

Townsend was sentenced to three years in prison Thursday.
