Good Samaritan says suspect in theft threatened him over stolen beer

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police are asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect who threatened a man after stealing beer from a convenience store.

Officers said the suspect stole beer from the Country Food Market in southeast Portland Tuesday afternoon.

Store owner Tony Vu said video from the store shows that the man got away with an 18-pack of beer. Vu added that when he followed the thief out the store, the guy took off down the Springwater Corridor trail and a cyclist helped chase after him.

That cyclist told FOX 12 that he tried to get the suspect to drop the beer, but the man instead pushed the cyclist, asking him if he wanted to get hurt. The cyclist said the man then pulled out what looked like a gun and pointed it at him.

The suspect did get away, and Vu said looking back it was a frightening experience just to witness.

“It’s kind of scary because he could have got hurt, but I’m glad everything turned out that he was okay, that he didn’t get hurt,” he said.

That good Samaritan, Steve Moller, said he never actually saw a gun because he was trying to get away from the man when he allegedly pulled it out.

Police ask anyone with any information on the case to please call the tip line at 503-823-4357.
