Die-hard Timbers fans camp out ahead of Sunday's match

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The kickoff for the Timbers match with the Seattle Sounders is noon Sunday, but die-hard Portland fans have already set up tents to make sure they get into the park early.

Fans say this is the ultimate match, and the demand among the Timbers Army for the best seats is high.

Because there are so many people who want the best seats, the Timbers will issue about a thousand wristbands which indicate fans’ places in line to choose their seat.

Those bands will be given out three to six hours before kickoff.

Those already waiting outside Providence Park are finding creative ways to pass the time.

Some campers are keeping themselves occupied with “Pokemon Go,” with one fan even showing off his Timbers scarf stitched with the game’s catchphrase "Gotta catch ‘em all."

Gary Buckler, who calls himself “Timbers Santa,” started camping Thursday to be second in line. Buckler said he's a season ticket holder and has been waiting for this match all year.

"The more we're here, the more we cheer, the better it is," he said.

Buckler said he's seen police patrol the area and hasn't seen any issues, adding that the fans look out for each other.

Team officials say fans who have tickets but don't get one of the bands should not worry since there will still be many seats available.

The match between the Cascadia Cup rivals will be broadcast nationally on FOX. Fans can tune-in to pre-game coverage starting at 11:30 a.m. Sunday on FOX 12.

Fans at the game can also meet some of the FOX 12 team. Just look for them in Section 95.
