A man accused of killing three people found dead in a Woodland home and injuring a fourth made his first appearance in court Monday morning.

Brent Luyster, 35, is charged with three counts of murder in the first degree and one count each of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon.

Police said a woman showed up at a convenience store in Woodland around 10:20 p.m. Friday suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.

From there, Clark County deputies and SWAT officers searched a property in the 4000 block of Northwest 417th Street, where they found three additional victims deceased.

Luyster was taken into custody Saturday afternoon when Cowlitz County deputies located him on Ocean Beach Highway. He's being held without bail in the Clark County Jail.

In court documents released Monday, deputies recounted their first communications with the woman who survived the attack, Breanne Leigh. Unable to speak, she wrote notes to investigators stating where the shooting occurred and that she thought another woman had been shot in the face just before she had been shot.

Leigh also communicated to deputies that she thought two other people who were at the property had been shot, and explained she had escaped by passing out before she "army crawled" away from the house and flagged down a motorist.

The court documents also identify the three people found dead at the property on NW 417th St. as Janell Renee Knight, 43, and Joseph Mark Lamar, 38, of Woodland and Zachary David Thompson, 36, of Camas.

Prosecutors said Luyster has an extensive criminal history that goes back to 1990s.

In May, Luyster was accused of repeatedly beating a woman with a pistol at a home in Longview and in 2013 he and two other men were arrested on charges that they threatened to kill a black man at a Vancouver bar.

Luyster is scheduled to be arraigned on August 1.
