SKAMANIA COUNTY, WA (KPTV) -

Investigators with the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office and the Volcano Rescue Team said they have recovered the body of a man who went over the falls at Lava Canyon this weekend.

Deputies and crews from North Country EMS responded to a 911 call Sunday to an area 20 miles northeast of Cougar, Washington off of U.S. Forest Service 83 Road in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Witnesses at the scene said that James Fowler, 25, was attempting to cross the Muddy River just above the Lava Canyon Falls when he stepped off a partially submerged rock and was swept over the 100-foot falls by swift water.

One of the witnesses told deputies he saw Fowler’s body floating face down below the falls, but that he could not reach him due to the terrain.

Crews continued to search late into Sunday night, with the Volcano Rescue Team providing aerial support. Search activities were suspended at 9:00 p.m.

Searchers found Fowler’s body around 12:30 p.m. Monday. The remains will be taken to the Clark County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
