Vancouver rock painting group spreads joy

Posted: Updated:

Rock painting groups are popping up around the Portland metro area. But members don't just paint the rocks, they hide and hunt for them, too – all to help spread joy.

Fox 12 caught up with some members of the Vancouver "Rocks!" group.

The idea is to paint up a rock with whatever type of design you want, then to hide it somewhere around town.  There is a Facebook page where you can post hints about where you left a rock to help someone else find it.

"It gets a little addicting," said group member Madilyn McMaster. "At first we thought it was going to be boring, but after we found the first rock, we wanted to keep doing it."

And if you find one, you can either keep it or hide it somewhere else for someone else to find.

Group organizers say they hope more people will join in.

"Whether you have artistic skills or not, whether you're creative or not, if you have a hobby, anything you can think of to paint, you can do it," said group member Jessie Gardener. "You don't have to be perfect. It doesn't have to be beautiful. Slap some paint on a rock, slap some glitter on there and you've got something beautiful to hide. That's going to make a 3-year-old, a 2-year-old, anybody light up and shine and be like, 'Look what I found, yay.'"

The Vancouver "Rocks!" Facebook page has grown to more than 4,000 members.
