A "career offender" was sentenced to 15 years in prison after the seizure of 17 pounds of methamphetamine and three handguns, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Todd Alan Nelson, 51, of Salem, was sentenced last week to a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute meth, followed by a consecutive five-year mandatory minimum sentence for possession of a firearm during and in relation to a drug offense.

The case began in October 2014 when DEA agents and detectives with the Salem Police Department identified Nelson as a supply source of methamphetamine in the area.

Search warrants were obtained for Nelson's car, home and a storage locker in December 2014.

Investigators said Nelson's car contained nearly 2,000 grams of meth, along with scales, $9,700 in cash and a 9mm handgun with an obliterated serial number.

Agents seized more meth, packaging materials, scales and a stolen 9 mm Sig Sauer P225 from his home.

Investigators said the storage locker in Keizer contained several more pounds of meth, packaging materials and a loaded 9 mm Czech 75d handgun.

In all, the DEA reported that approximately 17 pounds of meth was found in connection to Nelson.

The Department of Justice said Nelson meets the criteria for a career offender under U.S. sentencing guidelines because he committed new drug trafficking and violent crimes with two prior drug delivery convictions, in 2003 and 2006.

At the time of his arrest in this case, he was being supervised by the Marion County Circuit Court for a prior conviction.

Nelson was also sentenced to 10 years of post-prison supervision once he's released from custody.
